Community Events and Activities

Finding affordable and appropriate activities for clients can be a daunting task when starting out in direct care.  Of course clients are always encouraged to attend the free Michael Czichotzki Learning Center (MCLC).  The agency has made passes available for direct care staff to checkout. These passes are for visits with clients to the YMCA, the Red River Zoo, Children's Museum at Yunker Farm, and Beads on Broadway.  To use these passes, staff can check them out from the office.  Please see the Receptionist for assistance. Employees are asked to return the passes back to the office within three business days of checkout.  This allows other staff to use the passes. Any employee who does not not return the pass within that time will be subject to a fee.  There are also several available free passes that you can ask the Activities Coordinator about.

Check out the October calendar of events and this guide for more information about things going on this month!

Other potential client activities are as follows:

The Lake Agassiz Regional Library is located right by the office and has open computer time, chess boards, various free activities and plenty of books.  The main Fargo Public Library across the river also has plenty of events.  There is also a Little Free Library on the sidewalk a block around the corner from the MCLC with free books to borrow.

Moorhead houses Safari Cinema with tickets for only $3.50 and $2.00 movies on Tuesdays.  Century Cinema and West Acres Cinema in Fargo have $5.00 movies all day on Tuesdays with $5.00 student tickets on Thursdays.  Showtimes and other pricing for all theatres is available on their website.  They also have Reel Movies for Real Needs one Saturday a month at 10:30 am.  Reel Movies is a showing with lower stimulation for individuals who may need accommodations.  There are also events at the Historic Fargo Theatre.

Moorhead Days Inn (by the interstate) has an indoor swimming pool and mini golf course that clients can both use for only $5.00.  Hotel management asks that staff fills out a sign-out sheet at the front desk.  This deal is available every day except for Friday and Saturday after 6:00 pm.  If the Days Inn pool is under construction clients can use the indoor pool at Travel Lodge in Moorhead or Rhodeway Inn in Fargo for $5.00.  Also check out The Red Raven Espresso Parlor for free board games and various events.  Clients and staff only have to pay $1.00 to play pool at Fargo Billiards and Gastropub.  There are also indoor walking and running tracks at the Moorhead Sports Center and Concordia College.

Art & Culture

Rourke Art Museum in Moorhead has $5.00 admission, staff can attend for free when accompanying clients.  Fargo's Plains Art Museum has free admission the second and fourth Thursday of every month.  The Lake Agassiz Regional Library has free passes to the Hjemkomst Center, check the library desk every Monday for new passes, staff admission is alsofree with clients.  MSUM also has a Planetarium with regular shows for the public for $5.00.  The Inspire Lab at the Moorhead Center Mall is a great nearby location for clients.  They are very open to adapting to customers needs and have fun art and science projects and regularly host a special Access night on the second Monday of each month.  Concordia has several music recitals that are free to attend.

Outdoor Activities

There are several outdoor opportunities for nice days.  Moorhead has two golf courses: Meadows and Village Green.  It is $5.00 for a bucket of balls on the driving range, you can check out a golf club at the MCLC if your client needs to use one for the day.  It is free to attend baseball and softball games at Concordia.  There are also several free parks, such as Gooseberry which includes great playground equipment, bike paths and a bridge over to the Fargo's Lindenwood Park.  You can also check out a Frisbee golf set at the front desk in the office.  There is a nearby course at Woodlawn Park.  The new Northern Plains Botanical Garden is near Yunker Farm and free to the public.  Moorhead also has free outdoor tracks at Moorhead High School, Ellen Hopkins Elementary, Horizon Middle School and Townsite Park.

Performing Arts

Access is part of the Star Program with the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theatre.  FMCT offers us ten free tickets to a preview performance of each of their productions.  A sing-up sheet is posted on the events bulletin board in the office.  You will also be able to register for future productions on this website.  You will not actually receive tickets for these productions.  You just need to let them know that you are with Access when you arrive.  FMCT rates all of their productions for content and audience appropriateness.  Please visit their website for further information regarding the productions.  Also check for plays at Theatre B, Trollwood Performing Arts School and various local schools.

Take your clients bowling at Sunset Lanes (Moorhead), you just need to tell them you're with Access and you'll receive free shoes, and bowl for $2.60 per person per game - any day of the week, any time of the day.  At All-Star Bowl (Moorhead), you can bowl on Mondays between 3 and 5 p.m. for only $4 per person (staff or client).  That price includes shoes and two hours of bowling.  Again, just tell them you're with Access when you show up.  The Bowler in Fargo lets individuals with disabilities and their caregivers bowl for $2.25 a game, they also provide free shoes.

The Arc puts on dances for individuals with disabilities a few Mondays a month during the school year at Ellen Hopkins Elementary in Moorhead.  Every Friday there are also dances at the RDJ Building in Fargo at the Activity Center.  Check out other times that the Activity center is open, their space is reserved specifically for people with different abilities.

Animal Shelters

If you have a client who love animals you can check out volunteer opportunities at several local shelters including: Diamond in the Ruff, Homeward Animal Shelter and 4LUV of Dog.  There is also a pet store at the West Acres Mall that is fun look at.
